What kind of impact has the Youth Challenge Fund been able to make over the past 6 years within the city of Toronto? What are the tangible indicators of its success?

What happens when a handful of young people respond to a challenge, and in so doing mobilize and transform their city?
This 27-minute documentary answers that very question by capturing the work of the Youth Challenge Fund.
YCF is a collaborative pilot project with the Government of Ontario, United Way Toronto and community that was created to explore, develop and incubate new approaches to funding and facilitating youth development – one that puts young people in the driver’s seat.
Narrator Alica Hall escorts the viewer to several of Toronto’s “priority neighbourhoods”, targeted for investment, where we learn about the innovative work being done by youth and their adult and institutional allies, in a sampling of YCF-funded initiatives. The storyline is punctuated with personal stories from youth leaders, community allies and institutional partners, all of whom have played vital roles in this shared journey to achieve systemic transformation. Hall describes her personal story – from youth initiative leader to YCF Intern to United Way Communications Officer – as “part of the YCF legacy.”

For the past two years I’ve been approaching my friend Brendan Phillip in social environments and asking him if he wanted to a video collaboration with me and my peoples. FINALLY one summer night I saw Brendan and he told me that he was moving, and that was the universal kick in the bum I needed to finally make this video piece come together. Myself, Mark Valino, and Brendan Phillip met up at a certain Toronto street corner and made some magic happen before he jettisoned this fine city we call Toronto.Valino’s Log
I’ve been wanting to do an live piece with Brendan Philip for a couple years now ever since I heard “You Don’t Got To Be Sexy All The Time”. The first time I heard his sound I was so intrigued, it was definately something I’ve never heard before ,at least from out of Toronto. So for the past couple years I’ve had a sharp eye on him and his 88 days of fortune companions. Finally with the help of Giles Monette this shoot was able to happen 2 days before BP moved. I’m glad it all came together because BP is one of those artists that I would have been kicking myself if I didn’t get the chance to work with him when I had the chance. This piece is a acoustic version of a song off BP’s new project “Purplehearts” co-conceived with the talented Lord Quest.Purple Hearts can be downloaded free here:

Flutist Jef Kearns and The Beatchild teamed up for a funk driven single (“Play On”) after Jef was called in to do the flute session work on the Slakadeliqs album, “The Other Side of Tomorrow”. Leaving no sonic stone unturned, they took it to Tom Coyne (Michael Jackson, Ne-Yo, Kool and the Gang) for mastering.
Timian (with a vision of dancing buildings and a hand for animation) developed the music video concept along with Jef. Timian created motion graphics and a sense of 3D using two dimensional still photos.
