Singer / songwriter / producer Khalel drops off a collection of unmastered demo tracks ranging from as far back as like 2004 / 2005’ish to about 2010 or 2011’ish. Can’t remember the window exactly but dude definitely had a moment back in the day where he was getting some good airplay, doing shows etc., so it’s really nice to go back with a likkle compilation like this. Definitely some gems here including the especially lovely “Lady in Blue”, “Girl You Are My Soul” and “Life”. Shouts to the city!
“Understand” starts with a smooth, and mellow beat that’s bound to make you rock with it. Spread on top is a clean, simple melody that sounds sweet, and light-hearted when contrasted with the heavy swagger of the thump that is the bass line. ElceeTheArtist hits you with his laid-back, soulful, conversational flow. His melodic bars venture into sung lyrics and then ease back into that comfortable conversational style again. Listen to the lyrics, and you’ll get a glimpse into his thoughts about the unpredictable grind that is hip-hop in Toronto. The track plays you out with a soulful sample poured over the beat. It’s a shorter track, but after 1:54, you’ll understand.
Missed this a couple weeks back. Get to know the boi!
Hailing from Montreal, Kaytranada and his “99.9%” album are currently taking the music industry by storm. With features from Craig David, Anderson. Paak, Vic Mensa, Goldlink and many more the sound is genre bending and will have you on the edge of your seat with the turn of every track.
Joining Sway in the Morning he speaks on his childhood in Canada and how he came across Fruity Loops and began to make music. Taking inspiration from everything from The Neptunes to Michael Jackson to 90’s pop, he began crafting a sound all his own.
Getting noticed on Soundcloud through his various beats and remix’s he caught the attention of Janet Jackson and Madonna. Given the VIP treatment by Madonna while opening up for her he speaks on how touring opened up the door for depression after going through the same routine day in and day out. Revealing his sexual orientation to The Fader he opens up about how coming out of the closet helped ease his depression.
During the rest of his time he speaks on the different in the music scenes of Montreal and Toronto and jokes about making a giant Canadian collaborative album.
Bare shows this week. Check out The Strangers and co. this Friday night at Revival. Bom bom!
I don’t think there has ever been a group as lyrically powerful as Naturally Born Strangers. Rich Kidd, Tona and Adam Bomb make up the 2015 Juno winning Rap trio. They recently released stunning visuals for Jameson Ave., another hit single from their award winning debut CD, The Legends League Presents. See hits from the this, alongside new material, live for the first time at #BigTicket June 24th. Get hype and check out this DJ Law, NBS video mix.
